Chris - I feel your pain when it comes to focus/DOF and the 60mm lens. I recently bought a 60mm Macro (Nikkor) and try for many of the same macro photos found in your portolio. This is a great shot and one to be proud of.

Hi Chris, the dof is shallow, you should shoot this at 11.0 or higher. The bg will still be out of focus and the flower will be in better focus. I do like the color and the texture of the flower

Chris, I am glad that this floral photo is in the home page, anyway, as it's a good picture for me. On the whole I agree with Gayle about your inclination to center the suject but just in this picture I think that the composition is well chosen as it is adequate to the feeling of emersion from the depth; my personal feeling of course. Ciao.

Thank you for your suggestions Gayle, I am open to any and all comments given. I appreciate your honest opinion. It will give me some ideas for future work. When I do prints I usually tend frame them off center as I am aware of all the guidelines of thirds/off center/angles. I do find for a lot of my Macro images off centering them does not feel right to me. Most of my images are cropped down to focus the viewer on the subject rather then the background. As you say it is very subjective. Thanks again and I hope you will critique some of my future work. All the best, Chris

ok,i just did a quick scan of most of your floral images and the comments...nobody says anything about your tendency to center most,if not all,of your flowers which often puts them in the "just another floral image" category...don't get me wrong, the colors, dof and techs seem pretty good for most, but composing can make a big difference...are ya wishing me bad things right now?...LOL...hope you are open to honest crits...photo-art is very subjective and i can only comment about what i like, but traditional shots leave more room for crits..
This flower has gorgeous deep purple color and contrasts very well with the BG color...i love the light, dof and that it has a 3-D look...lacks sharp focus,as you already mention, and the placement within the framing is too centered...
regards,gayle

a velvet flower, my dear friend! ok, i know u're so critic on your images (as i am for mines.. eheh) but in this case, personally, the velvet texture of the petals, and the deep purple color of the flower, looks so pretty that the focus pass in a second stage.... u know how much i like that dark tones..... congrats, Chris! Ciao Da'

Actually, I don't think the focus is really that far off. If you had a slightly smaller aperture you probably would have nailed it. I have issues with many of my flower photos as well; the color looks really good but the depth of field could have been just a bit better. But really, overall a very nice image. The one thing I might suggest is it appears to be a bit dark; you may be able to pull some shadow detail out if you were to brighten it up just a bit.
