Awesome summer mood in this one, love the grainy effect, and the threatening sky. It has very nice texture, however you arrived at it - by filters or post-processing, it doesn't really matter, important is to know what you're aiming for and howto get there - you certainly do a great job :)Ina

You have so many incredibly fantastic shots but I'd have to say this is one of my fav's! I really like the infra-reds that you've taken also. Thanks very much for the nice comments on my pics! Joey

The Neat image software really cleans up the noise well.I think I might have added some grain to begin with in Photoshop Elements just to make it look like the old Kodak B+W Infrared print film. That stuff was really coarse.Digital infrared is so much easier than the old print film. But it does have it's quirkiness when it comes to focusing sometimes.Mostly because of the almost opaque filter....thanks!!

Nice barn scene, Rick. I'll have to see about getting an IR filter, these results are fantastic.
Somebody here at UF turned me on to a program called Neat Image for removing noise. I took the liberty of running your photo through it. It has a tendency to further soften photos so I then ran it through unsharp mask once and then used unsharp mask on just the building area. Then a little burning on the buildings.
I'm sure it could look better but since I don't yet understand the settings in Neat Image, this was just a fast run through.
Hope you don't mind that I took the liberty.
Best wishes, Dave

Thanks rick - that's been really really helpful. Some interesting cloud fomrations today. I'll try a couple on the way home today. 4-8 seconds huh? Wow. Need a pretty still day then with little wind and slow moving clouds otherwise, there's bound to be some blurring.
I'll post some results up.
Thanks again Rick.

Simon,I use a 52 mm, Hoya R72 INFRARED FILTER with a 52 mm adapter sold at Adorama or Amazon .com. I set the ISO to 200 and use a tripod because the shutter speed will be about 4-8 seconds in auto mode on a bright sunny day. When you are done with the first few pics fine tune your photos on your PC with your photo software.Adjusting the contrast, sharpness, brightness ect.You can shoot the photos in B+W or Color in the camera and just convert to B+W on you computer.Try a few shots in your backyard with the camera set on all different settings just to see what works best for you..........Thanks ...Rick

Rick,
I've a Coolpix 8700 and have just bought an infrared film. What's the easiest way to take infrared shots? I'm getting nothing out of it yet. I assume you set it to BW and the exposure is long. Can I take IR shots on automatic for instance? Any advice would be welcomed.
Thanks

A beautifully composed and powerful photo, Rick, with great contrast between the clear sky and the clouds. Yet the clouds retain much interesting detail, supported by the three silos and two barns. Foreground says a functioning farm with the crop being hay, etc. Really like it. Anson

Yes the image is a little on the soft side.Infrared seems to be a bit tricky when it comes to focus. Also this image was cropped and enlarged from a 2mb file so it lost a little of its sharpness along the way.THANKS!

Since the lens was at it's widest angle I had much distortion . I managed to take most of the lean out of the silos in Photoshop Elements. Thanks!!

Even though the silos look a little crooked and there is a fair amount of noise in the top of the frame, the moodiness and feel of the shot is great.

Like a merging of art and photography, a dreamlike image. Good results with filter. Small strip of foreground with threatening darkness looming overhead has high impact.
