About Shot at 400mm. Uncropped, exposure and saturation adjusted in RAW. This fellow enjoys insects and sap that collect in the holes he has drilled in the birch tree. He also enjoys waking people up by hammering on aluminum porch railings.

Pat, I know what you mean about blowing out the reds. Fortunately, the D200 is able to separate the histogram into Red, Green and Blue channels. You will have to underexpose until spiking ceases on the right side of the red graph. You can also monitor the blinking lights for the red channel. Lowering the contrast curve also lowers the saturation but I think it better to reduce exposure.

Eb - Totally awesome. I have tried several shots of cardinals. There is something about the concentrated red that appears to "blur" my shots. I guess they are oversaturated.

I've been woke up many a morning by one of these guys, Eb! My husband and I call them red breasted alarm clocks!
Your focus is incredible on this one! Great capture!

Thanks, Lara. I agree that the other one is the better composition. I posted this one mainly for the close-in detail and the surprising focal accuracy - pure luck given that this bird moves fast.

This has a more formal feel, though focal point is perfect. I prefer the other one for its inquisitive catch.
