Looks like something out of a horror movie! And after reading about this delightful creature, I think he does belong in one of SciFi movies!
WONDERFUL macro, PERFECT details, I am amazed. His eyes are incredible.

Hi Dave, The ringflash is great for flowers and insects but does NOT work for waterdrops - the ringlike reflections just spoils it. Joggie

I am startled by your response that you use the on-board flash. I thought sure you were going to tell me you use a ring flash. I guess I am startled because having used the Canon Rebel flash for so long, I assume on-board flashes are utterly useless.
But then I have to remember that I have played with the on-board flash of my new 30D and was shocked that it was much better than the Rebel. Heck, I may even decide to start using a flash again, considering the 30D does so well.
Meanwhile, I bought a ring flash when I bought the 30D. Just haven't mastered it yet, nor even found the time to read the manual. It's supposed to be great (according to the salesman) but you can't prove it by me.
Best wishes, Dave

Thanks Hugo - youare perfectly right and I am (painfully) aware of the halo. It was not visisble in the full size PS format image - the smaller the size with resizing, the greater the visibility of the halo. I used the shadow/highlight filter in PS to get more detail in the dark coloured bug against the near-whites of the lily and waterdrops (two extremes again). I think the ultimate solution for me is to get the Nikon D200 which keeps lots of data in those dark areas (shortcoming on the D70). What about a Usefilm fund? ha-ha! Regards. Joggie

Hi Joggie, I'm really speechless this time, and can't offer you much more than a discription of the outstanding quality - which you are probably aware of, too...
But wait! - there's one thing:
It looks like you used the shadow - hightlight tool; it leaves a lighter halo, especially noticeable in the background in the by the bug enclosed areas around its head. I think just a bit more subtlety in those areas, and you would've been as close to a perfect photo as one could possibly get in this area of photography....
Cheers,
Hugo

Thanks for the comment Dave - the flash? I used the built-in flash of the D70. I've tried various other flashes (bigger ones)with drops at this magnification yet the D70 flash proved to be the best. Because it is small, the reflections are also small, especially if the drops are small. The size, locality and intensity of the reflection is also dependent on the angle of the flash to the drop surface. Cloning out all the highlights may lead to a flat image without depth and very little structure imo. Kind regards. Joggie

I think what is amazing is that you use a flash on these little critters. Care to expound on the type? You can't be more than an inch away, maybe two(?) and you get no washout, no high glare from the shiny spots. There is a little bit here and there but it is very minimal and actually acts as highlighting.
I wonder what it would do to the overall photo if you did clone out what little flash glare there is? I'll say one thing, his eye sure does show up red, which in this case has nothing to do with red eye.
Best wishes, Dave
