I meant the version I had tried.. with some play on the lighting.. but it loses out on details, as you said..

Such majestic creatures!
A really beautiful photograph. The colours of the sky and grass draw your eye to the strong colour of the elephants; and then you see the detail on their skin! Fantastic.

Thank you for your comment Jinggoy.
As I mentioned to Dave above, centring the subject has always been my preference and I think it works well for me, regardless of what the "rules" might say.

Thank you for your comment Dave.
I have never been one for following rules, especially those related to fractional positioning. I much prefer to centre my subject and it is rare that I take any fractions, thirds or otherwise into consideration when composing a shot. I guess my defiance of the rules is somewhat my trademark and perhaps that is why my images do not get as many positive comments/recognition as many of the other images on this site. But generally I am quite please with the results, so it is something I can get over.

Interesting suggestion with the lighting, however I believe you have lost too much detail from the elephants with the modification.

I really like the composition of this one, Edward, even though a few of the standard "rules" are broken! Just shows that they're only a place to start. Excellent focus, with the details and textures captured. Dave.

Oh kenya...my dream destination.. Lovely photo, at first you 'scared' me with the title, as I thought the elephants were dying from because of the draught or sth. Central composition works well, as well as the low saturation of colurs. Excellent!

This is a great shot...even if it is nothing but elephant butts. :-) I love the framing and the muted tones/low saturation work well here.
Well done, J
