Hi Judi, Thanks for your comment. Lots of people in the USA keep parakeets as pets. These guys have flourished around the Silicon Valley (the area where I live) although I don’t know if in this area they have established self-sustaining populations like in Los Angeles for example. A few years ago my wife saw a large flock of budgerigars and Amazon parrots flying around a nearby starbucks. But the one killed by this Coopers is my first one.
Every single species of parakeets, budgerigars, parrots and macaws that you can image has been imported into the USA. And many of the wild parrots are out there because their owners could not stand them and let them go, despite the hundreds of dollars they spent on them. Although many of them also find their way out of captivity by them selves.
If you are interested, you may want to take a look at this link. It’s about parrots born wild in the USA. http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:kVQ34DG3lWcJ:www.parrotchronicles.com/marchapril2003/feral.htm+wild+parrots+california&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=3
With those powerful talens it’s hard to believe that this little guy suffered at all, but predation is key in the balance of nature. Unfortunately I did not see the kill. When I saw this Cooper, he was perched high on a light post. And obviously I went back home, got my camera and waited for him a few minutes. Then, he came down and started “walking” heading toward his prey. I could not believe what I was seeing. Unfortunately he could not finish eating his prey because he got scared by a vehicle and flew away. BTW, this guy looks a lot as “your backyard visitor” shot. I definitely hope to see him again. Take care and hope everything is going well with you and your family. Best wishes. Yamil

OMG!!! This is an incredible shot. I know that budgerigars are native to Australia...but I didn't know that they were wild in USA. Do you have many budgies as pets over your way? If so, what colour varities? I know the worlds most common caged bird is the Gouldian which is another native Australian. I haven't been to your country so I do not know.
I hope this little bird didn't suffer to much....did you actually get to photograph the kill or is this how you found it. I feel sorry for the poor little thing. But you did great to be at the right place at the right time.

Great shot as always Yamil.
The bright colours of the parakeet in an otherwise reduced colour shot make for great contrast.
All the best, Ed

Lol! Funny how these things happen right in our own backyard. The owner of that parakeet must be looking for her now. Great capture Yamil!

You got him with the evidence, Yamil! I guess someones parakeet got loose. You never know when you'll get a good shot like this even without travelling far out of the city. Dave.
