I like this portrait, Alessandro. The sharp background or environmental context is important - so the crop is just perfect. After all, it is tribute to Arnold Newman who, I think, would have included such detail.

Ciao Giuliano, sono appena tornato dal weekend in montagna..e chiaramente ho trovato coda! Grazie per il tuo utile commento ricco di consigli..proverò la tecnica del polistirolo! E sperimenterò anche sui tagli..ad esempio sul tuo amato formato quadrato! Interessante la tua versione..peccato che la foto in sè non aveva un bello sfondo forse..ma non era molto studiata!

Ultimo suggerimento (sempre se non te lo hanno ancora scritto...)
Cerca di mettere un pannello bianco (io suggerisco sempre un polistirolo, costa poco e riflette benissimo!) opposto alla luce in modo da schiarire il volto in ombra. Rimarrà sempre in ombra ma meno netta. Attento poi agli oggetti sullo sfondo.... e non aver paura di tagliargli la testa. Prova magari anche solo con lo scroll. Ti accorgerai che darai ancor più enfasi allo sguardo... anzi ti allego una mia versione...
Ovviamente il fuoco deve essere sugli occhi

Grazie per il bel commento Ninni, in effetti qui mio padre è stato un po' colto di sorpresa, come nella foto precedente daltronde..guardava la tv..avevo lì la macchina foto e, vedendo la sua posa, gli ho detto "stai fermo!" e mentre cercavo la giusta composizione probabilmente non sapeva che espressione tenere..non era molto studiato il ritratto..cioè lui non era molto consapevole!

Ottimo ritratto, curato il taglio e la composizione dell'ambiente, nell'espressione si coglie un filino di imbarazzo ... e quindi è anche più simpatica. Mi piace sicuramente più di quella a colori, a volte il taglio esasperatamente originale risulta meno valido di quello classico, purchè curato.

ale, great tones, good model setup and nice natural light, next time however try to focus your portrait on your model a bit more and diminish background to secondary, symbolic but somehow complementing role. I'm learning too, Cheers. NJ

Well done to you Ale this is a great conversion to mono tones my friend. A good strong crop and excellent lighting in this pleasing portrait of your father. As a follow-up go in even closer and reduce the extraneous background into a blur with a wide aperture dof. Great stuff my friend. My very best wishes to you as always.....Ray
