About My father and my daughter. I love this image, but both my father and I were a little sad when we saw it. It was the first time we realized that he's not a young man anymore. I am now thirty -- the age that I always remember him being. He is nearly twice that.

Not that he's old. It's just that the years somehow go by without being noticed.

Beautiful picture, Cheryl! The hands of old men protect the child with tenderness.. Very touching. Must be wonderful to have them both around you, see the time pass by from generation to generation...

I'm almost there, Cheryl. Perphaps that is way I don't see one drop of sadness in this picture. What I see is love, care and trust.
Getting old can be as beaufiful as being a child. Marília

What a touching image. I love hands and feet especially in young and old. Old shows character and hard work and young - so soft and gentle. This is fabulous. I can see how this would be very dear to you. You have made me think how nice it would be to have one to show the difference of my grandfather and my daughter. I am 31 and that would be a cherished heirloom. Thanks for sharing.

Matt, it's not a crop, but it was taken at just about exactly the same moment, and is pretty much identical, save for the closeness. I like both of them a lot -- the full-body image for the personal connection, and the close-up as a symbol for the passing on of life through the generations. I'm glad you still think it's woderful. =)

James, I do hope you'll be able to photograph your father. It was a wonderful experience for me. In fact, we've decided to take more tomorrow. There's something about the experience that's been very therapeutic. Good luck.

Cheryl,

Is this a crop from your "at grampas house"? I prefer the full frame - it has more feeling, IMHO.

Not that this isn't simply woderful, but not as good as the original.

Thankyou Cheryl. That brought tears to my eyes as I am facing the same thing. Where does the time go? And go so rapidly? I have yet to photograph my father. I am afraid. So many things to say but not having the courage to revisit some of them. nice work. Do more. Don't miss the opportunity. Thankyou, James

Thanks for your comments.

Chad, it's not 125 film. Tri-X 220 is 320 film. The tones are a product of the printing. The detail in the dark right side has been lost in the scan, but is alive and well on the original. I intentionally use dark clothing for these types of shots because lighter clothing decreases the starkness and the impact of the skin tones.

Great idea well realized!

Great tones! It seems a little grainy for 125 film though. One thing I may try to change is dodging the upper right corner so that his shirt sleeve doesnt blend with the background. Now it looks as though his hand is severed and floating there. I do like the black background though so maybe the shot would have been a little better if he had been wearing a lighter shirt.
