About A variety of birds played key roles in Egyptian mythological and religious beliefs. Several raptorial species, especially, stand out prominently and significantly. Certainly the most notable and frequently illustrated, especially as a hieroglyphic sign, was the distinctive falcon belonging to Horus = Kestrel (Falco naumanni and Falco tinnunculus) the powerful god of the sky, who was closely connected with kingship.

Taken from:
Ancient Egypt Magazine
Volume 3 Issue 2 - September / October 2002
Birds in Ancient Egypt - The Plumage of the Gods

The Egyptian species closely resemblance the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius).

The kestrel have been a real challenge for me and finally I got a decent shot of him, although this is a juvenile and I really wanted to get the adult, which is much more colorful. In fact the kestrel is the most colorful of all the falcons.
I hope you guys like this one.

Yamil,

This is a very impressinve shot. The freeze of the Falcon is spot on. The details are out of the world and to me...IMHO a shot that is well deserved of all the awards available.
My Best Regards

Yamil: we are doing OK. I'm in DC now taking care of my Dad who fell down and broke his hip... I'll be in DC until the end of this month. We wish you well, and hope that you will visit us in Alaska sometime soon!

Hi Steve,
Thank you for your comment.
How are you guys doing?
The hawks are back and it's about to get even better.
The juveniles are getting bigger and smarter and the migrants should be arriving by the next month.
In case you are interested, September is the peak of their migration.
This year Arrastradero has been quiet, but Rancho San Antonio is very active.
Please say hello to Mary and hope to see you again.
Yamil

I haven't had much time to view images this summer, and the satellite internet service we use has been acting up, so I can't often even load usefilm pages. Nice shot Yamil!

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your comment,
Actually the males don't have white dots along the edge of their tail, the dots are black. The images that I saw in the Sibley Guide to Birds showed a solid black band covering the tip of the caudal feathers.
This one for sure is a juvenile male. Thanks to their sexual diphorphism it's very easy to tell the difference between female and male. Females are pale and males are very colorful. Also, another tip to remember is juvenile males and females resemble the respective adult.
Keep in touch
Yamil

Really good image, again, Yamil. Do the males acquire the white dots along the edge of the tail with maturity, or is this a female?

Great shot Yamil.

Are you and Marcus going to put together a coffee table book: "Birds in Flight"?

A friend of mine is trying to convince me to go to Costa Rica, any suggestions on good areas for wildlife/birds?

All the best,
Ed
