About This is an alternative version (v2) of Busting Out . . . an earlier CC image. Paul Lara's suggestion for a soft, diffused shadow has been adopted over the white area . . . I considered Ellen Havrilla's suggestion to blur the BG but felt that it was not making the image 'pop' enough so instead adjusted contrast and light to separate the action from the BG..... Gotta' say I love the CC for giving valuable input and advice whether taken or not.

So . . . what of it? Does this improve the previous image?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm???

Creative image Doyle, the lightened background and suttle shadows give this image the 3d busting out appearance you were looking for. Well done.

Yeah yeah Dave . . . it has knock-off, PS wannabe adjustment layers too!! I will certainly have to experiment. Heck, I might even read the book. ;)

Yup, there are maybe a couple of ways to accomplish this. Assuming your knock-off, PS wannabe software (LOL) has the ability to do adjustment layers, you can handle it that way.

Using an adjustment layer in PS, you would black out the form of the bull and rider using the paint brush tool on the adjustment layer itself. Once that is done (the most labor intesive part), you could then adjust the non-blacked out layer to your hearts content. Of course, you would also want to black out the foreground so it is not affected, too. I haven't tried this yet but I'd bet if you use lighter shades of gray as the background continues, the changes would be as heavy as the far background.

It would be something to experiment with, anyway.

Dave:
Man oh Man - that's a great point! Ideally then . . . if I understand your point, I will need to selectively pull the gorund out of the composition and use a graduated change from foreground to BG as it pertains to brightness / contrast, etc. Great point . . . makes sense . . . and thanks for the idea . . . (Now why didn't I think of that)?

Doyle I <~~~~~

Dave Arnold Dave Arnold   {K:55680} 8/21/2006
Okay, as I said, I don't like the lightended background. And in looking at it again, I'll tell you why. While you left the bull and rider at original brightness levels, the ground below them was lightened as if it were background. In doing so, you've lost the 3D appeal or feel.

In order to simulate DOF, you need to keep the longitudinal aspects the same in continuity. In other words, the far background can be blurred or lightened but the foreground needs to portray the same crispness, clarity or brightness as the main subject.

The ground below the left front hoof, for instance, should be the same brightness as the hoof. In effect, you've put this bull on a bike and made him go on a Mary Poppins ride.

That make sense?

My bad, Doyle. Looks like you did take my suggestion long before I even suggested it. Oh, you're good. I will give you that.

Best wishes, happy shooting and all the good stuff. blah blah blah

Doyle, you're on fire! What an entertaining trip around your latest uploads it's been! Love where your going with the "Bustin'Out" shots. I do prefer the first one though, but can understand the need to push the bg out. I think simulating a tighter dof would do the trick too. Try making a selection around the background again (making sure to feather, say, 5px) and add gassian blur - 5.0, then go to edit > fade and bring it down to about 40% (experiment to taste). Should give the bg a nice dreamy feel. I'm assuming here that you have photoshop at your disposal...?

Oh, Doyle, I have to say I much prefer the first version! :)))

I think the darker background in the first version really helps to 'thrust out' the bull and rider at the viewer.

Doyle, the composition is very creative, I like it allot, it adds a flavor and make it almost as if it was a 3D :)
The only thing regarding the bull jumping out of the picture, I would remove the land beneath its leg to make the leg stands out of the frame completely IMHO this would add to it,
But this doesn't mean by any chance that it is not a neat capture,
Very well composed and captured,

Thanks Shirley . . . It certainly seems like most people agree . . . including myself. Looks like my instincts were initially good . . . but you know . . . comments and suggestions . . . ideas not previously considered . . . Give 'em a shot and see what the consensus is. In the past . . . changes have become masterpieces after a few minor re-works . . . Like when Leonardo reworked the blonde "Theresa Lisa" into a brunette "Mona Lisa"! You just have to check all the angles and see; if there's any doubt. But thanks so much for your comments!
