I like this photograph, because I often try to shoot our frieslands - what bothers me is the fact that their eyes never show up - I see you have the same problem with the two on the left. Lovely clear image indeed.

Hi Raquel,

You are absolutely right. Although my initial reaction was to square it, the longer I looked at it, the more I began to like the original composition - for the same reasons. Thanks for showing me - my mind is made up now, It'll be the rectangular version I'll be showing...:)

Much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Wonderful composition and wide lense effects,
but I told "WOW" when I saw your original shot!
I think that dark part of sky would give a better depth. Grass already has dark and light part, if sky would have two colors, I think that it would be kind of framing inside the picture, and much better colors!(Just my opinion)
It is much easier to show through attacment :-)
Greetings

Excellent shot Hugo - firstly due to the low angle and secondly to the superb control of exposure and great colour. My first thought was that the spots on the right was dust but looking more closely I saw it was flies, given away by the one on the forehead and confirmed by your comment to someone else - Great camera and lense. Great work as always.

Hi Saeed, thanks for your feedback. The yellow tags do reference to the cow's health record. And as there's not a cow in the Netherlands without them, they rather grow on you.

You can never have too much speed for wildlife capture, but hear with those cows you did benefit, in respect of getting close and arranging your capture, the low/high view along with the perfect moment to capture a movement of the fore ground cow with its tongue just put out in work the low angle also produced such great figure out of the cows against the sky.
I think this shot one of the best in the series and good work for animal production commercial purposes.
The yellow tags probably indicate that, those cows are original and not mad cows :)

Saeed

Hello Hugo.
finally I have the possibility soon to see third in series (I will posted the last one of the dandelion.. i believe.. and i hope - i'm very tired).
I have read of the effect noise in the sensor, but also I watch “togheter”, is appreciable the square format and the context of the composition. moreover I see the funny expression of before cow to right, has the long "tongue"..

cheers

Hi Andre, Thanks for your thoughts, very interesting! Eventhough your reasoning for the square format, I seem to be leaning towards the portrait formatted photo. Don't really know why, though. Think I'll have to ponder on it a bit more! I guess it's also because the fluffy sky emphasises the wideness of the Dutch country in all it's flatness, But that amay also because it was such a beautiful night when I went out there in the fields, and that personal reference might also influence the decision. Thus I value your imput greatly! Thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Sorry to be confusing Hugo, the fermentation was my oblique way of asking whether the cows were drunk ;)

On the second image, I don't think your decision on the tag was wrong, just that its softness was distracting, I think the idea was great.

Cheers

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 8/15/2006
Hi Hugo,
The portrait format does showcase the sky more than the one you posted. however I think the one you posted suits the square format better. Here is my reasoning. The fact that the larger, lead cow has it's head down low to the ground, helps to balance the image out in the one you originally posted. If that cow's head was up high in the standing position, the portrait would definitly be the way to go. I like the original fine the way it is. Maybe the position of the cow's head was affecting your decision on the original crop? I don't really get the feeling of the image being too closed in.

Hey Doyle!

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with the shadow in the foreground, and it was rather difficult to get my shadow out of the way.

Cows seem to have a natural attraction to weird guys in a ditch pointing glassy things at them, and they actually came to me... Even when I waded my way to another cow, these girls followed me. I just guess I smell good, but that could've been the ditch too...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hey Hugo

I should have known your return would have heralded yet another Moooo-ving Cow composition.

I don't think I have much to offer you by way of advice on this one. I love the significant cloud cover evident in the sky....and the wide angle approach to my eye is just some good fun. Like so many others before me have already mentioned the cow commercials out here on the west coast have this same 'fun' feel to them! A scenic, even idyllic image . . . the colors do not need increased saturation to my eye. I do not care for the lower foreground shady area though . . . it seems distracting. Other than that, though, I have very little to suggest or recommend.

Now . . . did you do your own cow herding or did you get a little help?? :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Hi Hugo, how have you been? What another wonderful original scene here, this does have a very commercial look to it, like somone else mentioned we get these happy cows here on tv and in the mags, and this has simularities but is actually much better! I see rina likes big tongues LOL, excellent as always.
Take Care.

Hi Andre, Cows are great. They're more patient and curious than any other model I've worked with. But they always tend to keep an eye on that weird dude in the ditch pointing glassy things at them.

I took this shot around 9.30 hrs pm, on a lush summer evening, good guess! As to the square format, I'm not really sure, the portrait version allows just a bit more impact of the sky, which I rather like. Wonder what you think; the longer I look at this series (also having seen the portrait format print of 2 x 1.40 meters)the more convinced I've become that the square format closes the composition a bit too much... (see attached photo)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your feedback. The first would be my favourite too. Highlighting / dodging the eyes of the two cows on the left would definitely help, I agree with you on that. Not sure what you mean by the fermentation in the grass... The leaning cows are obviously a result of the crop and the wide angle..

As to the second image, I'm not sure if the other ear wasn't tagged too. I did make the deliberate decision to make the tag the primary subject of the composition, although I'm beginning to doubt how justified that decision was...;) However, the softness was definitely unintentional - only noticed it when it was too late to do anything about it...

Cheers,

hugo

Hi Hugo,
I like your Mooooh series! This one and the first most of all. That lead cow is really staring right at you by the looks of it. :) The composition fits nice in the square image. This has that soft, long-shadow, late in the day look to it. A wonderful time of day to shoot this kind of image. The clouds with a hint of blue sky are very attractive in this shot too. They don't hit you over the head with drama in this case, but simply float there in the relaxed atmosphere.
Nice job!

Fun mini cow series you have going here Hugo. Another great perspective and wonderful poses from these cows. I like the timing of getting the cow sticking out it's tongue towards the grass. Well executed and perfect exposure to keep detail in both white and black parts of the cows.

  0

Bruce Harper   {K:5305} 8/14/2006
Hi Hugo, love what you've done with all three in this series. The unusual perspectives really make us look at the common cow in a very different way. The first is my favourite, and it looks great on the wall, I'm sure the client is very happy.
This would be my second preference, but I love the leaning cows. Is that a wide angle effect or is there a bit of fermentation happening in the grass ;) I think some 'yellows' of the eyes in the back two cows would be helpful, and I'm not so keen on the buildings on the horizon, I find them slightly distracting.
While I'm here, I might as well comment on the 2nd image too - I loved the composition and the colour of the cow but found the out of focus ear tag too distracting, perhaps a shot of the other side without the tag?

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 8/13/2006
Hey Martin,

Thanks for your comment. The only tough thing was to get my shadow out of the image, and get close enough, but both were feasible...

The spots you see are the flies surrounding the cows, not dust on the sensor. I thought they were dust spots at first too, but when I zoomed in, I could clearly distinguish the shape of flies, and the other photos in this series don't show them...

I'm still amazed by the quality of the D2x, never thought they'd show up when I took the photo.

Cheers,

Hugo

Are you paying these models a fair wage for the excellent posing? You continue to show the beauty and expressiveness of these wonderful animals. The cows (middle and left) do not show much face detail but it looks like their eyes are closed. Maybe a bit too dark there; could use minor highlighting. Might have had a little more impact if photo more in the horizontal.

Love the drunken angles, awesome perspective. What a shame that enormous tongue is partially hidden by the grass. It's a show stopper, that one!

Superb quality Hugo. The only real critique I can offer is boosting the saturation (just a tiny wee bit so not to look unnatural) for the grass and sky. But then, that's more my personal taste than a prob with the image.

Having fun? :)
