About (Part 2 of 3) I was originally going to upload 5 photos but cut it down to 3 since I feel they're getting a bit repetitive.

33rd Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the infamous Corkscrew. The Corkscrew is turn 8 and 8A on this race track and is a gut-wrenching left to right hander including a 300ft elevation change within a very short distance.

Toyota Motorsports brought their current F1 car (which they are using for their Formula 1 season which is still going on), the TF106 from Cologne, Germany to run a couple of demonstration laps. While doing so, it beat the absolute lap record today by over 1 second.

Motorsport shots don't garner a lot of interest here, but I hope those who are into it, as well as those who aren't can appreciate the shots - definately not an easy task panning cars easily reaching 200+mph. Plus this was my first attempt at panning race cars.

Shot was handheld, manual focus. Comments appreciated!

Thanks for the comments James! Yeah, panning does take practice and patience. I had plenty of really blurry shots for this series. Luckily he did a few passes so I was able to get some good shots.

Michael will definately be missed - only 3 more races to see him in action. Hope he wins it one last time :)

very good result i think, been trying panning myself with the 4 second dragsters, and man is it tricky, i usually only get 1 focused shot out of 3, (need more FPS)!

good clarity here and i like the angle...

and hats off to michael, what a career...

cheers.

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the comments! The Sigma lens was a solid performer for the weekend - I actually picked it up just for this event (especially since it's only $100 brand new for my Pentax).

For continous panning shots, the AF was a bit slow for me (might just be the Pentax and might be faster on your Nikon), so I used manual focusing. For regular shots, the AF is nice and quick. The images are nice and sharp - although at 24mm it can be a bit soft. I got a variety of great shots at the races and would definately recommend it.

Hi again Andre - I agree with you on the blur. I was experimenting with slower shutter speeds but I just couldn't get any decent shots unless I used a faster shutter. If I had a monopod I probably could have managed to get some more foreground and background blur. This was my first time panning motorsports with a long lens so I wanted to make sure I got decent shots - especially since I'll probably never see a F1 car @ Laguna Seca again ;)

I do appreciate your input though - Thanks again!

Toshi,
Another nice one! I do like the tighter crop on this one.
How do you like your sigma lens? I was thinking about a sigma as well.

Hi Toshi,
I agree with Hugo on the reduced negative space being a plus on this one. The painted blue rumble strips are just a little distracting and in this case a more severe blur on the ground would have helped that situation. You probably have some shots like that too, so you will know what I'm talking about.

Thanks again Hugo! I wanted didn't want to crop much on the first shot, so as to set up the location of the track (just for this series of pics). Each succeeding photo will show more action and get a bit closer for effect, I hope ;)

Hi Toshi,

The feeling of speed is even stronger in this one. I also like the reduced amount of negative space. Good shot, much stronger and more proficient than the previous one - looking forward to the next...:)

Cheers,

Hugo
