About I rarely get a chance to shoot at sunset or sunrise anymore, this shot was taken at 10am and unfortunately the cliff was in shadow. I have used a full frame 3 stop ND + a 2 stop grad ND and a circ. polariser to induce the slow shutter in the bright sunlight. At the bottom of the cliff is a pool that was built by convicts for the Governor in the late 1800's. Locals call it the Bogey Hole. f/22, 8sec, 15mm.

I agree - this old shot is not so good. I was trying to get slow shutter speed in bright light. Unfortunately I don't have time for photography now, hopefully I will upload new photos soon. Are you going to include coastal shots in your photo book? I would like to see some.
Regards,
Collin.

Thanks John, I just wish I had more time to devote. I can't remember when I last went out to photograph. Merge to HDR is something I have only recently discovered but only experimented in my front yard. You take a series of exposures (tripod mounted), say from 3 stops under to 3 stops over in 1-2 stop increments. That way you have exposed for the shadows, mid tones and highlights. In PS, file, automate, merge to HDR, select the images to merge. The resultant will be a 32 bit high dynamic range image with no blown highlights or crushed shadows. You will have to tone map to convert to 8 or 16bit before editing. I took 13 exposures (overkill) in my front yard pointing toward the sun with lots of shadows and produced a perfectly exposed image. I'm on holidays in 2 weeks so hopefully I will be able to try this on the coast. It may mean and end to graduated neutral density filters. Regards, Collin.

Hi Colin. Thanks for your comment on my shot. You have a great PF. I'm not sure what you mean by 'Have you tried the merge to HDR feature in photoshop'. All advice would be appreciated. I did merge two raw images of the same shot. John

Ha - it certainly does. I was looking for a foreground to help create a sense of depth. I didn't put the rock there, just to the left had been a small land slip.

Thanks, Peter. It is a style I'm quite fond of. Your portfolio is excellent, you're fortunate to live on the west coast with the sun seting out to sea. I will be on holidays in a couple of weeks so hopefully I'll have some new shots to upload soon. Sorry I haven't added you to my friends list yet, as I haven't donated to usefilm yet I am currently at my friends limit. Regards, Collin.

Hi Colin, sensational work, I love the comp, colour and detail. I've had a look at your pics and like them all. We seem to have a similar bent to detail in the fg, ocean, interesting sky and slow shutter speeds. I look forward to seeing more of your images.

Regards
Peter.

HDR might be a good approach for this particular scene. It would blur the waves, superimposing a series of images one on top of the other, but your time exposure has a similar effect, although doubtless better smoothed. Beautiful spot! My experience is that you need at least a unipod to keep the camera still enough for good HDR images.
