I'll second everything he said with the exception of iso400, it's fairly well accepted that lower iso's provide less grain and higher resolution (if thats what you're after....), as far as the aperture selection goes - how much depth of field you want is usually a good basis to decide that upon, if you're worried about the lens being sharp at x aperture chances are its not a very good lens~

A nice image. I suggest not to use auto at all. The birds eye is not very in focus. When photographying a bird it is important to focus on its eye. Given the lighting, I would have used f/8 to get the maximum resolution (f/8 gives the highest resolution). I personally prefer slides to negatives when it comes to wildlife photography, as the image becomes sharper. My favorite slide for wildlife photography is Provia 400.
