About The Palace of Fine Arts Rotunda . . . The new fisheye lens . . . What better way to step into the Perspective project?? And . . . there are FOUR other early-bird photographers to help show the scale of this place!

"The Palace was not designed as 'a Valentine for San Francisco.' Maybeck (The architect) visualized its colonnade streaming with people, finding a reward within the great doors."

The task of creating a Palace of Fine Arts for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition fell to the architect Bernard R. Maybeck, then fifty years old and known for his innovative ideas. Setting to work on this new project, he chose as his theme a Roman ruin, mutilated and overgrown, in the mood of a Piranesi engraving. But this ruin was not to exist solely for itself to show "the mortality of grandeur and the vanity of human wishes .... " Although it was meant to give delight by its exterior beauty, its purpose was also to offer all visitors a stimulating experience within doors.

In playing host to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, The Fair, which opened on February 20, 1915, San Francisco was honoring the discovery of the Pacific Ocean and the completion of the Panama Canal; it was also celebrating its own resurrection after the shattering earthquake and fire of 1906.

Truly intereesting distorsion, that create a destabilizing point of view, like if we were hit by Vertigo feeling...
real cool also the people distorted.

This is a stunning fisheye shot my dear Doyle and a great entry into the project. I am so pleased to see that you are still working your way around the various project categories. Well done you.
The details are fabulous in this shot and the colour tones are beautiful. The perspective is superb and the fellow photographers aid you in providing scale. Top marks my friend. My very best wishes to you as always....Ray:)

Don't know how I missed this looking through my friends' pages before, but I LOVE the distortion in this photo. I think it works really well here, ESPECIALLY in contrast to how "straight" the pavement is!

Well done, Doyle! :-D

I have always been fascinated by that park, it has the beauty of a classic ruin in the middle of a sprawling metropolis.
I was there.. without a camera. Bummer!
Great use of the fish eye... and of the photographers, they lend you perspective and proportion.

Yes, I know such nets and similar "protections" since they have them here in Lucerne also. The funny thing here is to see how the birds find ways to get behind them. There they sit in their nests behind the net, and so I ask myself, are they to protect the building, or the... birds? ;-)

Ciao,

Nick

Thanks Sheila! Apparently, the lens is NOT perfect for photographing my granddaughter though! :(

Mom and Grandma immediately said "Don't you DARE put that up!"

Cydney and I rather enjoyed the 'funhouse' look. Even took a few of myself and got the same response . . . hmmmmmmm . . . :)

Thanks Nick. A spectacular place. The dark interior of the dome is actually a black net . . . presumably to prevent birds nesting or bats roosting . . . and effective in that task. Very cool place to visit.
