Thanks Anna:
I was raised in a lot of places but Germany in the 60s was WONDERFUL. While there I learned to speak German - but lack of use has caused that skill to atrophy. We missed experiencing a lot of the unrest that was happening in the US due to the Vietnam War and the peace movement . . . instead visiting Heidelburg's zoo . . . cross country train trips . . . European tours . . . all wonderful experiences . . . Back to the states in 1969 allowed us to experience more than enough unrest, since the War still had time to run . . . and to be even more grateful for the wonderful . . . unforgettable time we were lucky enough to have in Europe. What's not to love?

No doubt you're correct Simon. They say hindsight is 20/20 . . . but I just didn't pick up on the other craft until John mentioned it earlier in the comment string. An incredibly easy clone too. Thanks for commenting and I think you're right . . . the cloning out of the other would improve this shot! :)

Thanks so much for coming back on this one. I guess this is all supposed to go in the forums (fora?) but whatever...
I've pretty much decided on the D70s but yes, the D80 is out there now. You felt you were not ready for the D200 - perhaps you're too modest. I wonder if I'm ready for the D80. I'm quite happy to play around with something that is a big step up from my A2 for a couple of years - in my search for an upgrade I have found several reviews of the A2 that confirm my own view that I am being held back by its technical limitations.
So the D70s looks like the best option at present. I don't want auto settings. I don't want in-camera software. Maybe on my first uploads I'll just pretend I'm still using the A2...
Once again, many thanks for your opinion, John

I very much like the shape of the spinnaker and you have emphasised it by placing it, brightly coloured in a monochrome scene. There is interest all around, wit the yacht, the water and the mountain side, but you are always brought back to the sail which seems to join them together.
After looking at it for some time I noticed the yacht near the shore, which then became too impotrant within the frame. It could no doubt be cloned out if you felt so inclined.

Good call Lisa . . . As a rule of thumb . . . ANY hint of PS work will kill a photo's chance for an award and pretty much doom the ratings. But still . . . there are exceptions and once in a while I really like to see it, especially if it's done well. Besides, I don't live for awards or ratings . . . and . . . well I LIKE this one! LoL! Thanks for the comments!!

Ahhhhhh . . . smokestack! Stupid BG Yacht! Once again right there on the spot to point out those details John! LoL!
Great question about the Nikon DSLR. As it happens . . . I was seriously considering (and rejected) a D200 upgrade. THAT camera is very good AND unforgiving and I felt I was not ready for it. The D70S and the D50 (have checked thouroughly into both) are essentially the same camera with the same sensor but differing storage mediums, a few details and pre-sets etc. I'm guessing, like me, you will be foregoing a lot of the auto functions for the manual settings though differing autos are available on each. I will be upgrading to the D80 though. Initially, I fully expect the photo quality to dip until experience overcomes the issues and with an over 10MP sensor, we have, essentially a D200 in a D70 body . . . and that WILL be my next change.
I have used the D50 out of choice. I have been offered a D200 - D70S or camera of my choice by my lovely wife Marlyce . . . but choice the D50 with no regrets . . . knowing as I got better at the manual work I would eventually upgrade. I will likely do so soon.
Hope this has helped.

Wowowowow... hard to keep up with all of your awesome work Doyle! Love the selective desat here, very nice post work choices made indeed. I'd imagine with the original, the background would have most likely dominated/distracted, so this has worked to keep the focus on the yacht and sail, where it should be. Yeah, great scene, well composed and captured :)
Cheers Rina.

It's a great shot, and a technique that I love, but in my ever critical "miserable git" mood, I wish that other yacht wasn't there in the background.
But Doyle, the real reason for my visit this time is to ask your advice. I want to buy a new camera and it's going to be a Nikon DSLR. But is it the D50 (with which you take absolutely superb photos), the D70s or the D80?
As one of my favourite UFers I would really value your opinion. I feel I'm in a photographic rut and need to do something about it fast! (On the other hand, I know I shouldn't blame my problems on my equipment, but I really do feel that my A2 is letting me down now...)
My feeling is that as an inexperienced amateur, the D50 will probably prove to be an excellent companion. But the D70s seems to have more sophistication at the same price, and I'm prepared to persevere and learn. Then again, why not push the boat out and go for the D80? Well, I've read some reviews that suggest that at my level of competence I would take worse pics with the D80 than with the D50.
So, it's not a question of dosh. My question is this: do you use the D50 because it's a superb camera that suits your needs, or would you upgrade to the D70s or D80 if you had the opportunity?
John

Not "black-whiting" the sail was a really great idea. It is nice to see the work of the wind on it... Lovely composition and great luminosity. Well done!

What a great contrast you“ve made in this one, Doyle. Just magnificent! Sailing is indeed wonderful especially using...sails! No engine, just the sound of the water against the sides of the boat, the scent of the fresh salty ocean and the wind in your hair- and when it“s really good there“s also that bright thing up in the sky providing heat and light:-) Take care and don“t work too hard. Are you moving to the farm this weekend?? Best wishes, Annemette
