About Class Project: Hi-Key/Low-Key Evoking a Mood.

This statue at Fountain Hills is a remarkable work. It is completely composed of junk metal objects. The work is from Oregon artist, Dixie Jewett and she calls this work "Maytag Matilda" and it's prominently displayed at the Fountainside Plaza.

I must have shot about 150 images of this starting at about 4 PM till 7:30 PM giving me lots of different lighting situations to work with. Unfortunately, I don't think much of this shoot came out very well. I only gleaned 2 shots from this session that work for me. This one was one of the first five shots I took of the statue and I over-exposed it to create a hi-key. I then post-processed it in Photoshop to convert it to B&W and dodge the background.

I think the result makes it look almost like an illustration. What do you think?

Comments are always welcomed. Thanks for stopping by to look at my work.

~ Warm regards, Rocky

I do like how your postprocessing has made this look like an illustration. A fascinating piece.

Yes I think it's almost like an illustration too. I didn't know about this artist, how creative and talented of her! I think you achieved the effect that you were after Rocky, very nice high-key effect, I don't see any blown out areas, you got some great details, and good light to show them. Nicely done, have a great weekend...big hugs..:) Lin

Hi Jan,

You're right, it's not relevant to this forum, which is probably why I always seem to have a problem putting my stuff into the right categories here.

The statue was chosen as a suggestion by the instructor but I do see your point. The work by the original artist is what comes through.

This is probably why I was very frustrated with getting so few shots that were worthwhile. I was looking to get something that was a unique angle or perspective of the artwork while trying to apply a hi-key or low-key exposure to it. This was not unlike the shots I did of the Frank Lloyd Wright spire... or, perhaps, any time someone is shooting architecture. The original work is what comes through but the photographer can choose a way to "see" it that may be unique.

In the end, it was probably a little over ambitious for me. I chose this shot because it was about as good as I could do with all the variables involved.

Thanks for the critique and kind comment.

Rocky-- you are right. It does look like a sketch. Not sure if that was the desired outcome but it does have an appeal to it.
The one issue I have is only based on how you describe the assignment - not really relevent to this forum - I do not see this as a mood evoking photo. In fact, not sure how a still life of someone elses' art would do that, other than the intrinsic mood of the orginal piece.
--Best regards, Jan
