Thank you Doyle... one of the best CC comments I've ever received (though I would say that since it's full of praise ;) )
This was a definate 'lucky timing' shot.. though a second earlier & I would have fully captured the second gull swooping down that caused this reaction (original photo attached) But well... we can't have everything!
The crop at the bottom was already part of the photo... as the gull was standing on a wooden fence... I increased the base slightly to add more solid standing so to speak... also a bit of PS magick for the toning to the background
Anyway... such a pleasure to receive your critique & the knowledge that this has been nominated for an award makes my day :)
Keep well & bright Sue x

Wow Sue . . . this is an interesting capture and getting a gull to pose like that could not have been an easy trick! Your composition, particularly your placement of the gull within the shot is almost spot-on perfect. I like the graduated BG on this one too. Two things, in my opinion, would have helped this shot. One is a tad bit better clarity . . . it has, to me, a little softness, particularly an issue around the head where a tack-sharp focus on the eye would have strengthened this a great deal. Note well that I'm not saying this is a bad shot . . . far from it . . . just that ( sigh ) "If only . . ." -- something I say often about my own shots. Of course, we get what we get and you got this . . . which though it might have been better . . . it is still one of the single most unique perspectives I have seen of a gull . . . if not THE most unique! The second thing I would suggest would be a drop on the bottom crop which cut the feet . . . though that's not that bad . . . and cut the tail . . . which is probably a bit more important. I mention these in the CC spirit Sue . . . but the bottom line is this is a very good shot and likely the best POV ever on a gull. I recognized this shot from its nomination for an award . . . so be aware . . . many people are very impressed with this one . . . and for good reason!! I am.
Regards, Doyle I <~~~~~
