Hi Darlene, This bird is truly an enigma. I agree with Andre and Todd. This guy looks like a Ring-necked Duck but its beak belongs to somebody else. This beak looks like the one from a Black- Bellied Whistling-Duck. Attached you'll find a pic of the Common Merganser female. http://www.usefilm.com/image/1237886.html Red-breasted Merganser male http://www.usefilm.com/image/1075852.html Hooded Merganser male http://www.usefilm.com/image/1230212.html and the Ring-necked Duck male http://www.usefilm.com/image/1050446.html Sometimes you can find a hybrid between Ring-necked and Lesser Scaup, but the beak of the lesser Scaup is different. Check this out. http://www.usefilm.com/image/1235431.html The beak of a Lesser Scaup looks alike the one from a Tufted Duck So in summary, I think you got a Ring-necked Duck X Whistling-Duck hybrid. unfortunately I could not find any scientific information that support my observation. BTW, you got a very interesting capture and thank you very much for posting this shot. Take care my friend and Happy New Year to you and your family. Best Wishes. Yamil

Hi Todd, Yeah! I thought just about the same as you about this guy. It looks exactly like a Ring-neck Duck, except the beak and eye are a different colour. Nothing else seems to come that close. Andre

save you for my desert Darlene. You know how much I love your work, just missing time to put comment on all your pictures since my last visit... Your orchids pic is fantastic with so nice details and colors, really love the composition and DOF, did 2 great sunsets too, and your heron's capture are really nice too. Ready to fly is my prefered one, so impressive and a real nice timing for the shooting with all the details and sharpness we can see on your birds pics. So has you see, it is always a great pleasure to see your work my friend. Hope everything is great for you and yours.
Take care and say hello to Donat from all of us. Wish you the best my friend :)

Hello Darlene,
You have indeed captured great detail in a subject that is hard to expose properly. I agree with Dave, much rather see detail in the duck than in the water.
This is not a Merganser of any kind, as they have long thin bills with serrated teeth. This looks like either a Ring-necked Duck or a Tufted Duck, but the color of the bill is confusing me. Ring-necked ducks have a grey-blue bill with a dark ring near the tip. Tufted Ducks have grey bills, not orange. It is possible you have captured a hybrid duck of some kind. If I come across a definite ID, I'll post again.
Take care.
Todd

Nice capture of the duck, Darlene! A difficult exposure situation to be sure, and I'd rather see detail in the duck than the water! Dave.

Hi Darlene, Nice shot! I don't think it is a Merganser though. Not 100% sure, but it looks like a Ring-necked Duck. Just looking in one of my books and it sure looks a lot like one, except that the beak and eye are not the same colour. The shape and pattern of the Black and White are the same though. Probably Marcus will know for sure :) Andre

Hey Darlene, Razor sharp as always. I bet you love this time of year when the waterfowl begin moving south. I would imagine you get more subjects to study.
My critque would be with the exposure, you did well to capture the detail in the dark areas but the first thing I noticed was the overexposed water. Do you shoot in Raw? My guess is there was just too much contrast at this time to capture a perfectly balanced exposure and you would have had to sacrafice detail in the dark areas to keep the water from clipping out on you.
Never the less, a fine Merganser in deed.
