Mark, thanks for the info. I've been picking up some excellent pointers from comments posted here on UF and will definitely give these techniques a try. Thanks for taking the time to give me some guidance.

HI Maryanne, great move from the 6006 to the D50. You'll never look back. I could have bought 3 D50's for what I spent on developing costs with my 6006. I think this shot probably looked different than what you saw there. The light is a little flat (looks like an overcast day) and that can make the color look dull. A couple easy things you can do with the camera. 1) Use the sRGB color space instead of the default RGB. It's called IIIa in the shooting menu.It produces more vivid color.
2) Make sure your white balance is set properly. A WB setting of shade will warm the color slightly.
3)In photoshop you can give the shot more pop by boosting the saturation slightly in the Image>adjustments>hue/saturation menu. The last tip is so easy but you have to use it judiciously. Go to Filter>Sharpen>unsharpmask. Try a setting of 28% on the level and 24 pixels on the radius. Voila! Instant contrast boost. I posted the edit here with those adjustments? What do you think? Hope this helps.

cheers, -mm

Thanks for this info, Alan. I appreciate the detailed info, as it gives me something specific to play around with.

This has been a very constructive, and instructive, day, and I appreciate all the advice and assistance I've received.

The level I changed is a mixture of shadow/midtone/highlight (50/10/5) so that I thought the brown was darkened, but the reflections were brought out by the mids and highs. The stream appears more like a mirror.

I don't mind at all, Alan. I'm finding it instructive to learn different techniques. But how did you lighten the brown in the stream? Does it appear lighter because of the added saturation and shadow, or did you do something else?

Thanks for your help.

Maryanne, I tried to lessen the brown in the stream (I might have gone overboard)and ended up turning your shot into something else. I hope you do not mind as it becomes a different animal altogether.

Added saturation, shadow, and softening.

Alan, I suppose I felt gloomy because all the vibrant colors of fall were gone. But I've gotten some very nice feedback on this one, so I'm glad I went ahead and posted these photos today.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Maryanne, you surprise me, you said everything was dark and gloomy and the colors in this are bursting out in the woods! It would have been cool if the water in the stream was a little less murky, but the tree reflection is great.
