Rui, I think you have captured the dog's personality very well in this photo - he does indeed look intelligent and gentle.
I'd suggest you crop the picture on the right, and also there's a dark spot in the bottom left corner which I think should be cropped too. I've done this in the attached image, see if you like it.
As to the background, it is rather exotic, but personally it doesn't distract me all that much, I am still able to concentrate on the dog easily. Kristina suggested B&W, so I tried something similar, duotone, just to check whether it would work.

A very cute dog, but I find the background colour very distracting. It steals all the attention from the dog. You have got a tiny bit of blue tones even in the white colour. I think this image would look great if you converted it to black and white.
