About This photograph (3684) was taken from the top floor of the Majestic Bay Theater here in Ballard on 7 January 2007.

No PS work has been done.

The blue and the red regions are from neon-style tubes. The thin blue lines are from hanging fiber optic lights. The various yellowish lights are different kinds of incandescent lights from across the street.

I look forward to your questions, comments, and criticisms.

Zamrud - This is a luxagraphic shot. You can see many such photographs in my Portfolio Luxagraphia Electronica.

You can read about the techniques involved in creating this kind of photographic experience here:

http://www.usefilm.com/photographer.asp?ID=107677&PF=25833

Essentially, they all involve either camera motion or camera and subject motion. This shot was all done using camera motion. No post-processing work was necessary.

Thanks.

Tu - Excellent. Unfortunately I cannot get close enough to the blue tubes I shot to get such rich texture out of them as I did from the red (for this shot I was only a couple of feet from the very large tubular letters). For the blue tubes I was maybe twenty feet away (they are along the top of a building). Look for one tomorrow.

Seeing this, I understand 'textural' in your comment to my pic.
Sharp lines of tubes and texture create rich image. I like it.

Art - I did some cool shots with some blue tubes last night which I will post eventually. I have an all red one that I will get up this week probably.

i see what you mean about the detail in the reds here,. reminds me of those fine wavy lines on bank notes,. great colours here, especially where the blue overlaps the red (lower centre)brill,. regards art,.

Michelle - Thanks. I'll take a look. I really like the patterns that emerged in this one out of the streaking lights.

Michael - Thanks. I did many shots of this letter Y (which is really just one y-shaped tube of red light). I am fascinated by the textural patters that came out with the camera motion, the hesitancy of the color to streak. You can just make out the letter A if you look closely but really the attention is all about the Y. And so I chose that sound (Y or why) to bring out in the title.

James -

This one has some really bold color which to me makes it somewhat more attractive as an abstract. Since the compositions of these abstracts is hard to pin down with more organic flowing shapes sometimes the color makes them stand out.

I really appreciate the use of color compliments - blue and red to give this some vibrant energy. I also like the off-centered weight and play of the shapes and forms.

I think the use of the Y makes for a good link back to reality - nothing like a bit of typography to make something abstract but still centered in the real world.

Tuna - Thank you. I have been doing a lot of shooting but not so much posting. Last year I shot over 24,000 pictures. Of course, only 1 per cent were any good. Haha. Anyway, I'll try to be better about getting pictures up. We are slowing down at work again so that will help. I've some good ones just aching to be seen.

Wonderful abstract James. Been working on a few of these myself, but not with the success that I would have hoped for, or that you have achieved.
What was your shutter speed?

I like it. The colour really catches the eye and I love the abstract look to it. Nice work.
