Thanks, Rach! It's all in the lens. This particular lens allows you to open up the aperature very big, which is what gives that very shallow depth of field.
I bet you could try it with your camera. You could either experiment by putting it on all manual and adjusting the aperature as wide as it will go (the smaller the number the wider it is, the bigger the number the smaller it is) and then adjusting the exposure depeding on the light. Usually the larger the aperature is the more light it will allow in.
Or you can put your camera into Aperature Priority mode. Then you can adjust the aperature and you camera will do everything else manually... I believe. I'm not sure how wide of a range your Canon has as far as aperature goes, but this particular lens I used here goes down to 1.8.... on your average lense the aperature will go down to about 4.0 or so.
Anyway... play around, experiment and see what your camera can do!
I wish I could get this effect with my camera. I love his eyes, nose, mouth are in focus but the ears, hair, and shirt are blurred. Really good DOF. I still have so much to learn. Great shot of Marreck!
