I'll have a look at that link, Jim. Cheers for that. By the way, when I was 19 (1988-9) I travelled across your country in a 1980 Chevette for 6 months, planning my route by throwing a dart at a map of the US every so often. I think I'd just read 'On The Road'. And on my trip I met lots of people who knew what was going on in the world! Admittedly I also came across many who didn't. Particularly in Chillicothe, Ohio, where I was attending a course in sound engineering. I used to play 9 ball pool in this roadside cafe on the outskirts of the town, and all the teenagers who hung out there thought I was from New York. My accent was so strange to them they just thought I was from some big city miles away. When I told them that I was from England, one of them said 'Where the hell's THAT?!' Feeling a bit put out, I replied 'Across the Atlantic Ocean' to which I got the same reply; 'Where the hell's THAT?!' I was saved from this deeply rewarding cultural exchange by a guy called Perry, who was a Vietnam vet who owned the cafe. He explained to them about England - that it was a country far, far away - and showed them a pound note he'd got from somewhere. This led to the immortal line from one of the teens 'D'ya mean you don't use DOLLARS where you come from?!' Priceless. I want to go back to the US one day to take photographs....

Pat... Here's a link you may enjoy. I am one of those rare Yanks what actually knows what has been going on in the world.

That's just what I was thinking about, although I didn't know about those job cuts... bloody hell. They must feel like weavers did when the industrial revolution kicked in. Ahh, the remorseless march of technology.... fat cheques for some, the dole queue for others.

Pat, you are not far off the mark. The week we were there (Jan. 6 - Jan. 12) Kodak decreased their workforce by 3,500 workers.

Jesus, just think how bad the poor guy would have felt if he'd been around to witness the advent of digital photography...
