About Last night I traveled to Ottawa and took some shots of the ice carvings at Winterlude, their winter carnival. They bring in carvers from all over the world to create these amazing, beautiful, intricate carvings out of ice. I put together a collage of some of my images. Top left there is an eagle about to catch a fish, to the right a hockey goalie and net, middle left are two carvers roughing out a piece with electric chainsaws, to their right a mastodon which is part of a larger display, bottom left is an uncompleted bear, in the bottom right a couple of more bears. I found it difficult to get good shots of these carvings. At night they are lit by a bank of multicoloured LEDs which cycle through a number of colours. The lights tend to highlight the interior of the ice structures without showing up the detail and texture of the carvings. Using a flash would not work so I shot these images without flash with high ISO. Generally, I was not real pleased with the results. I put some of the better ones together in this collage. I am interested in hearing suggestions as to how to capture ice carvings under these conditions.

Hi Giulio,
I checked out your collage. It looks great and the individual images are amazing. I should try out that approach. The backgrounds of my shots are not great. That is one reason I chose this style of collage so I could eliminage much of the distracting bg material. Thanks for viewing and your comments and suggestions.

All the best,
Joe

a so unusuale collage of unusual subject: they goes so well togheter with lights and vivid colours. Have you ever tryed to make a more crisp collage, like a square divided in 9 little squares, something like this :

i've done a lot of collage and i find this kind of work perfect for it!
Any way love your result!

Hi Dave, thanks for your comments. One of the most amazing carvings were these two flamingos. The necks and legs are so slender! I might try separating the bg with the snow fence from the carvings and paste it into a black bg similar to what you did to see how it turns out. If it works, I'll post it so you can see. Thanks for the help and the suggestions.

All the best,
Joe

Oops, didn't see Ina's last post with my URL, as I replied to yours directly from your reply! Thanks for looking, though!
Dave.

Hi Joe, a very nice collection of the ice carvings! I think you've done very well here with the artificial lighting and especially the colours. I was in Ottawa for the funeral but of course didn't have time to get down to see any of the Winterlude events which were just starting around then.
The only shots I've taken of ice sculptures were with natural daylight backlighting which worked fairly well. Of course the best course is bracketing, bracketing, bracketing to get the best results. Here is the post of mine: http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1062085
Thanks for your comments, and kind words as well.
Dave.

That was before digital, it wasn't anything worth posting :) But the food was memorable...

I checked out Dave's pic. He did a good job of separating the carvings from the backgrounds and placing them on a solid black bg. Seems this is a common problem when photographing ice carvings.
I've heard that the cruise buffets can be quite elaborate. How did your shot turn out?

Joe, don't worry about my name :) I also thought of Dave Stacey's pictures, he has some nice ice sculptures in his Winter portfolio:

My only attempt at photographing an ice sculpture was on a cruise, at the farewell buffet :))) and they were surrounded by food!

Hi Ian,
Thanks very much for your detailed feedback. The backgrounds, being not very interesting, were a problem. We had to deal with such things as temporary building framing (see more recent post of carvings) and snow fencing. Adding more people into the composition is a good idea. Thanks Ina.

Have a great day,
Joe

Very beautiful collage, Joe! The shapes are wonderful, and the multi-color lighting looks great, I love the various sculptures and the way you have included the carvers in the picture. I think you could show the pieces individually if you wish - maybe blur the background - just as you did here, and turn it to black, so the carvings appear floating and shining. But I don't know what kind of backgrounds you have, those could be interesting too, with more lights and people. It just looks great the way you put it together! Great presentation! Ina

Thanks nessa for viewing and the feedback and comments. Unfortunately, with the amount of detail in this collage the small image size doesn't do it justice.

All the best,
Joe
