Joggie, the DX-12R may be a little larger and capable of adapting to max. 77mm filter threads. It has a module for TTL capability on Nikon film cameras but auto only on digital. To get it to work at all on the D70/200, I have to insulate the pin which transmits TTL information. It seems to put out more light than the SB200s. With the panagor converter at 2.75x and my 60mm Nikkor it allows for settings up to f/32 aperture on the lens ring at ISO 100. I am quite excited at the prospect of summer and some macro wildlife to appear. Eb

Hi Eb, thanks my friend. No need to feel inferior - this is a great shot. What really does it for me is the context of the fly's habitat that you included and the backlighting, creating the soft lines in the background.
Taping the ringflash - never tried it, sounds like a good idea. I have the Sunpak GX8R. Very basic with no TTL metering link. Not sure how it differs from the DX-12R. I am looking forward to some uploads from you! Regards. Joggie

Thanks, Joggie! From the king of macro photography, this is a compliment indeed! It is an exposure from last summer which I felt inferior about. With time some photos improve! I just received a Sunpak DX-12R ringlight. I admire the light quality and detail that you are able to achieve with this rig, hence the motivation to find one for myself. Have you tried taping 1/2 the ring for a lighting ratio? Eb

More than just a macro shot of a fly! Great use of the leaf lines in the background to strengthen the composition. The fly well placed looking out over his "kingdom" Great use of backlighting! Lovely image Eb! Joggie

Pat, I don't remember, but I usually focus manually for macros and hand hold. It is just a matter of moving the head back and forth and trip the shutter when the subject snaps into focus. It is quite a bit easier with the smaller macro lens. Eb

Eb - Perfect focus on the head. Was this manual or auto? When I had my 200mm micro, I usually focused manually.

Hello Eb,
Splendid macro view. Nice composition with a very sharp fly and excellent use of DOF. The combination of colours fit well together and bring a nice natural atmosphere. Well seen and done. Compliments !
