Beautiful capture - really love the light through the wings - fantastically 'feathery' :). A longer lense would allow you to do less cropping. I have a 70-300 IS USM which is perfect for this kind of thing.

Don't know if it is my monitor as no one else has mentioned this, but the focus seems to be on your father's hand rather than the bird.
Other than that the DOF is perfect to bring out the bird and your father's hand.
