Hi Andre!
And many thanks for your nice and detailed comment. I also consider this as one of my best about trees. It has been a bit of work to make all settings and try to find some good angle, but it was worth doing. During work I was only thinking in classical terms of photography, which also shows that while many fashions come and go, there are also things that are there to stay, like for example classical photography. One should of course also try this and that, but without the sense for the classical I don't see how real development in one's work might happen. It seems that it is still knowledge of those little things like f/stops and metering and EV and whatever, that allow further steps to other styles but *with* substance.
The more I do photography the more I see myself admiring the classical work.
Best wishes,
Nick

Hi Nick, I think this one is one of the best of your recent posts. Excellent balance in the composition and beautifully muted natural colour throughout. This one is far removed from the recent tree image with the green on green challenge. This is exactly the kind of outstanding sky that you would want behind a snow covered tree. I like the gradual variation of the greys in the sky. Great job over-all! Andre

Thanks a lot for your nice and detailed comment, Hugo!
I have the impression that the sky enhances the brightness of the snow and thus it's contrast to the dark branches. It simply reflects much more light than the clouds, and so it is perceived as a source of light, where in reality it of course doesn't emit any light itself. Much like a case of contrast between two hues that physiologically seems to be greater than it physically is. Isn't that the reason why the snow seems to glow in a strange way under such a weather, while it seems simply "very white" in sunlight?
Anyway, many thanks again, and best wishes!
Nick

Hi Sylvia and meny thanks for the nice comment!
I made a light metering at two spots, one of them on snow and the other on the trunk of the tree - and it worked well, I think.
Some more of this kind will foloow. I hope that they'll be as appealing as this one.
Best wishes,
Nick.
P.S.: I didn't find any fairies there, but many too many birds that looked me from their nests and wondered what I might be doing out in the cold of that day. ;-)

Thank a lot for the great comment, Robert!
And of course it's a cracker - I heard the thin ice cracking under my feet and the stream was really cold! ;-)
No, seriously now, I had a bit of luck too, since there was absolutely no wind, and so the branches were perfectly still.
Thanks a lot again and best wishes,
Nick

Hi Nick,
Despite the far from favourable weather, with the over cast sky reducing the contrasts, I think you did very well with this one. The subtle details in the snow have been very well captured, and I like the effect of the broad snow covered branches of the tree, extending out to the sides of the image, as if controlling the lot. Very nice photo!
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Nick, Wonderful picture! You have managed to photograph the snow without it 'blowing out'. Very beautifully shaped tree, almost symmetrical in it growth. The whole photo has a magical fairytale look to it which I, personally find very appealing. Well done! 7++++++++++++++++++++++ Sylvia
