About	These two girls were stars, though I wished that the people also in the shot had moved out of the way - I blurred the background to put the focus totally on the girls. I think it worked...

Absolutely! You have captured more than just a portrait. I can feel the joy in this image.
The movement in the hair and the dresses is delightful. I like that the colours are kept to a minimum and I feel blurring the background was a good move, I didn't see the onlookers til after I read your comment and had another look.
The only bit I can be picky about is the halo effect around the arm of the little girl facing us.The blurring seems a little incomplete here.
