About My first and not entirely satisfactory effort after getting my Kenko extension tubes. This was done with a 36 mm tube and a Canon 50mm lens. Now I know that macro lenses and tubes are not as easy to set-up and use as they sound to be. Lots of little quirks, the biggest being getting a satisfactory support or set-up at the correct distance. I obviously have lots to learn.

Thanks, James. I did not get the level of detail and sharpness I had hoped for. I did convert it post-process in PS by selecting "monochrome".
--Best to you, Jan (and wearing my foil hat!!)

Looks pretty good to me. I guess you did the color conversion post-process?

Thanks, Onie. I am having fun with the tubes and obviously have a lot to learn.
This one was done with natural light but I am going to start playing with the flash & diffuser.
--Best to you, Jan

WAHOOOOO Jan... ~~GRIN~~ I LOVE this Sir...:)))

Brilliant the tubes arrived... Jan, this is great, a really nice *art deco* feel to the shot... Like Doyle, Colin used the off camera flash and speedlite with diffuser, bounce etc... I haven't worked that out yet... but will when we move... :))) I use natural light where possible... ~~GRIN~~ 'cos I have too...

Excellent plus from me Sir...:)))

Onie...

Doyle -- Thanks for the comment and advice. I really like the idea of delving into the "little world". I will play around and see what I can come up with.

Wow . . . WELCOME to the dark side!!! BWA HAHAHAhahahaaa! Great start, don't kid yourself. I see joe pointed out the lighting issue. Handheld, I can tell you now, is best done only when necessary. It takes so little to make the shot soft.

I'll tell you something StingRay mentioned to me when I first started the tubes (After drooling over his STUNNING floral macros long enough) . . . natural light, where possible, is preferable. I had asked about a ringflash (he has one) and he said he very rarely used it. Diffuser is a big plus (sounds like you have that covered) and off camera, side flashes really help to define the depth . . . I use a remote speedlight (TTL or TTL-BL) and bounce it with diffuser. That seems to really help overexposure issues too.

Jan this is a GREAT start . . . VERY promising!!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Thanks, Michele. I am still learning on how to effectively select and use the appropriate extension tubes and lens combinations but it is lots of fun.
--Thanks again, Jan

Hi Jan,
This is a great macro here. The shine on the concentric circles vivid the details of the individual circles, and the liner patterns in the rest of the frame makes the circles prominent and stands out.
Best regards,
Bhabesh

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a diffuser that slides into place for the external flash and will use it.

Also, a diffuser on your flash will help reduce bright or hot spots often seen with macro because the flash is so close to the subject. You can make one of these yourself using a plastic container or aluminum can and covering the opening with a paper towel.

Joe

Thanks, Joe. I am kicking myself for not thinking of that. I have the internal as well as an external flash and will play with that. Probably an off-camera or bounce flash would be best.
Don't think I am anywhere near ready for insects when you consider I have not come close to figuring out still-life. :)
Having a good time, though.

Looks good to me Jan. A flash is often used when shooting macro. Up your ISO a bit. Tubes reduce the amount of light passing through the lens. You should be able hand hold this set-up. If you are planning on shooting insects this is almost a necessity. Looking foreward to seeing more of your efforts,
Best regards.
Joe
