I love the lighting, tones and the fantastic "capture" of the character of this genteman!

I like the choice of the profile in this one Joggie since this old man has a very expressive face and profile as well. The right eye is so expressive!! The choice of B&W is perfect since it emphasizes the details of his old skin. My regret concern the light which is really too strong and attracts too much the eyes. This avoids, in MHO, to see the expression of the eye that you succeed to capture and for which, if one concentrates on it, one can feel a lot of thing.
Anyway, this is a nice work for a difficul domain.

I prefer this one Joggie, for the thouthful and intensive expression and the B&W, perfect here. But all the features of its face speak of strenght and strong will; the wrinkles, of hard work and great experience. Beautiful the angle and the management of the very stark contrast.
Always bravo Joggie.

Thanks Elisabeth - Professional? No, I am an amateur and I actually specialises in nature and macro photos. I do regard man as part of nature though, and when the opportunity arises I like to take character portraits, bringing out the essence of the person using available light. In this instance I spent a whole morning with this old man on a farm which was previously his property in order to learn more about the history of the place. It was a bright and sunny day, he wear a hat against the son so I could not find an ideal angle to take a photo without very harsh shadows over his face - Until we entered a little seaside chapel on the property.He went inside, took off his hat and sat down to rest a bit in the back row. The light was streaming in through the entrance behind him and reflected upwards by the tiled floors - who need strobe lights and studios under such perfect conditions? Regards.

WOW, this came out fantastic. It has all the elements of a wonderful portrait. Contrast, composition,drama and powerful imagery. It grabbed my eye as a thumbnail right away and i was not disappointed when seeing the full size

Very dramatic lighting in this one, Joggie, and b/w always seems to bring that out more, as well. I like this one, but I think I prefer to the colour as well, because it seems to bring out his personality more.

Joggie -- This is one of the finest character portraits that I have seen in a long time. The style is reminiscent of Karsh (but of course it really is your style, not Karsh). The detail, skin texture, lighting, tone, composition all work to best effect of producing this wonderful portrait. What adds wonder is your description of this gentleman; his age, strength and wisdom. This personifies the type of individual many of us would aspire to be.
