I think it's the HDR. The three-exposure burst takes about a second and so even slight subject movement, such as breathing, will produce slight artifacts in the finished photo which you see as softness.
Many people have commented on a slight three-dimensional effect in the photograph and I think that comes from the same source. The right and left eyes are perceiving slightly different perspectives in the image and interpreting them as distance differences. That's my best guess, anyway.

Very nice shot. I feel there is something not just right about the focus on this one. Maybe it's the HDR or the focus is just in front of the animal. Regards, Joe
