I think a thighter crop might help to move the tree from distraction to important element in the picture.
I attached something I have done in 5 minutes in photoshop, but it may give you some clues of what I thought.
If you crop closer to the subject, you'll eliminate the space beside the polar bear and the branches will do
nothing but help you look at your subject.

You may like it or not, it's a question of taste!

IMO the tree is a distraction, it's cutting your subject. Others may have a different opinion though. You had a good thought with it though :)
