They were fleeing us, although they were actually moving towards us to do it, they were seeking the safety of the water as they feel vulnerable on land. Hippos are actually one of the biggest killers in Africa, usually because people get beween them and water and they respond to the treat to their safety.

Great action captured here, with the water flying. I assume from your title they were fleeing from something. My first thought was that he had seen you and was charging!
