About I like the way the eye is drawn from the post to the ship in the background. The ship was heading for port about 1 mile from that point.

Well this is an unusual image and I think it's a rather good one. Like you said, the post draws the eye nicely to the top of the image, and once you're there, there's the ship.

This crop is very close to being a square, and that's part of what makes the composition work. The angle of the post adds dynamism to the strictly level horizon and the square-like format. In fact I've a tendency to call this image an abstract, because for me it's primarily about the interaction of all the different lines and textures and colour sections. The presence of the ship adds just the right counterbalance to have something going on in the upper right part.

Not sure why more people haven't looked at this. I think the composition works very well. Doesn't have the best detail -- over sharpened? -- and the skies a big noisy. But again, the overall effect is very nice (and an absolutely horizontal horizon to boot).

At first sight, as a thumbnail, the proportions seem to be lost. It is only when the photo is seen in full that the real feeling of distance & yearning comes to mind.
