Thank you, Ani... I love the surreal effect here, probably the result of all the noise... I do like this shot, though!

Kisses,
Dave

Thanks, John... it's not the long exposure for a particular photo, it is the totality of the shoot that matters. Takes hours but very relaxing.

Thanks, Gayle. I cannot get through to the moon/sun data sites today for some reason but basically, there was a 90-95% full moon. It was in and out of the clouds.

Shot was actually taken at 11:45 PM. The orange glow you see in the clouds is the result of cloud lightning (not actual bolts, just inside the clouds).

I thought about using my car lights to paint the scene but I couldn't justify leaving my camera on the mountain for about 6 hours while I 4X4'd across the valley. And that would have created a bit of an overexposure problem. :)

LOL... duh. I thought Nat Geo was some user name on a photo site... boy, do I feel stupid.

PS, also after I opened my big mouth about finding your pano tutorial, I saw you had posted all the info in the comments of that shot.

Thanks for that.

one more thing...IMO,you can afford to crop down to give better proportions....the FG and expanse of land holds more interest vs the sky...just saying ;>

ok,i don't get it per being that time of night shot...i was in NM during August about 4yrs ago and it did not look like that at midnight!...did you paint it with yore flashlight?...hehehe....just razzing ya,but can you explain why it comes across this lit with all of the ground detail?...i comprehend long exposures, but it has to grab light from something out there that was brighter than norm...full moon?...your car lights?.....educate me,dude ;>

per your shot, love the detail, dislike the split in the middle comp....also like the solitude and daybreak look of the the light

Very good landscape Dave, even without the best lighting support, the colors are AMAZING, and surely that ...almost heroic long exposure (hahahahaha...lol...I don't have the patience for so long...and I lost a lot hahahahaha) absolutely great and moody!!!

Thanks, Michael. Surely you can take a weekend night sometime and do some night stuff. Besides, I do recall seeing some night city shots from you, right?

I checked out the Flickr guy, very nice stuff. What is the other one? i.e., what is "the Maya"?, not one I've heard of.

There was absolutely nothing in this scene to give away the night shot, no roadways, no homes nothing. Way out in the boonies.

Best to ya,
Dave

Freakishly weird as it looks like an ordinary day shot. Normally something gives it away, but not this time.

I've started to see more and more night photography. You, Nat Geo recently on the Maya, and now over on the Flickr this guy called down_the_rabbit_hole. Inspiring. I just can't stay up that late.
