May 10 is the birth anniversary of Sir Thomas J. Lipton. Early in his life, around 1865, Lipton sailed for America. After earning enough money in America, Lipton returned to his hometown of Glasgow and opened a grocery store. By 1898, Lipton had shops all over Britian. He also had plantations in Ceylon, and large businesses in America. That same year he was knighted by Queen Victoria for his many achievments. Sir Thomas Lipton, founder of the Lipton Tea Company was one of the first retail business men to recognize the importance of brand name advertising. He believed people were more apt to spend their money if they were happy and in a good mood so he incorporated humor into most advertising. In the History of Tea, we shouldn't forget about the invention of the tea bag by New York tea merchant, Thomas Sullivan in 1908.
