Great work in B&W because of its extreme separation of foreground and background, and because of the antithesis: Foreground, sharp focus, but quite a small region of the image against background, soft focus and a much bigger part of the image. The spatial exaggeration of the background provides tension here!
The spectator is almost under pressure to adopt the view of the pidgeon. So you successefully make the spectator take part to this tension of antithesis! Intriguing!
