Hi Chris and thanks. No need for electricity. You paint with an off-the-camera flash and a flashlight. I also use a Coleman battery camping lantern inside the truck or subject.

You just have to have the right setting and a long enough exposure. Because while the shutter is open, you'll be walking around doing the painting.

So in this painting, I set up a blue gel on the lantern inside the truck. I used a red gelled flash on the left of the truck and a blue gelled flash on the right. Then I took a clear flashlight and walked right up to the headlights and exposed both of the them separately.

There will be some lessons you'll learn, such as making sure your flash or flashlight is not visible to the camera. That is tough to do. You either need to shield it (which can result in your shadow being captured if you are not careful) or be outside the frame (which is a problem due to light fall-off).

Best wishes, give it a try,
Dave

Nice work Dave. Great creativity, I have wanted to do some light painting myself but never figured out how to get the electricity to where I needed it for the lights. Guess I need to invest in some kind of small generator/battery equipment. Good subject matter for this type of work. All the best.

Hi Dave,
I like your style of lighting up the insides and headlight areas in these old junkers. It really adds a whole different fantasy slant to the images. It gives them a whole new life!
Great job on this one!
Andre
