About Mehndi (or Henna) is the application of henna (Hindustani: हेना- حنا- urdu) as a temporary form of skin decoration, most popular in South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Somaliland as well as expatriate communities from these areas. It is typically employed for special occasions, particularly weddings. It is usually drawn on the hands and feet, where the color will be darkest because the skin contains higher levels of keratin, with which the colorant of henna, lawsone, enters a permanent bind.

Oh yes, clearly is restricting sharp focus to certain (and also wished) areas a very powerful way for leading the attantion of the spectator.

The thing is that it can be done with camera/lens alone but only for a single range of DoF, and thus not for multiple depth regions in sharp focus. But here we have two different depth ranges that are in focus.

Which means that while camera/focus are only able of patterns like for example soft-sharp-soft, or sharp-soft, and the like, the manipulation in PS allows patterns with multiple sharp ranges like for example here, where it goes mostly sharp-soft-sharp-soft as we proceed from the foreground to the background.

So I, as perhaps a bit too fanatical about camera/lens only work ;-) , wonder if such a look might be feasible with some exotic kind of lens. I never heard of any similar lens, though.

And while life is special, have a very very nice shooting session with your friend. I wish I could join you in real, but I do join you with my next scotch once again!

Cheers to you, Avi!

Nick

Well, I do want the eyes (viewing the picture) to concentrate on the parts that I WANT them to concentrate, and not on other parts. That's why I use the softening sometimes. It helps me achieve what I set out to.

About Christmas, one of my friends is coming over to my place - so I guess we'll have some good time (some photography too, maybe).. but apart from that, as you said, life itself is special.

So CHEERS !!

Oh yes, I did realize that it was the floor, Avi! Sorry me if I gave you some other impression. Indeed it was a very well fitting thing to use that floor as a background, for which I might also say that I envy you a little bit! I only have streets with flat chewing gums, you see. ;-)

The idea to soften the rest worked very well - this is also why I asked you. So, for me it seems that this is an additional way to put more emphasis on some certain parts of a photo, when the aperture alone is not able to keep many different parts out of focus when they are at many different distances in the depth.

I was thinking about that, because I don't know if there is any piece of optics (lens, whatever) that can manage to have more than one and non-contiguous focal points at the same time. Theoretically it would be possible, but I don't know of any lens that is able to do that.

As about my Christmas plans, well, as an atheist I will have some whisky, some music, some work. Nothing special, but on the other hand life itself is special!

And what about you? Any plans?

Cheers,

Nick

The textured background is the floor.. it had those crack-like patterns which I guess went well here.

And I did soften the other parts except the hands and feet..

thanks and cheers !

P.S. What are your Christmas plans ?

Wow that looks faboulous dear Avi! Not only the bodypainting but also how it works well with the pattern in the floor. On photonet there´s a photographer and bodypainter(I´ve forgot his name- I think he´sRussian) He does the most fantastic work that I´m sure you´d appreciate.

A very good idea to keep all attention on the tattoos on this B&W one, Avi! The lighting makes them look very "serious" in a way - just as if you were making art by depicting another piece of art.

I find it surpising that the floor supports the appearance of the tattoos so well. Regarding this I would rather say that it wouldn't do so before I look to the image. It seems like being a very nicely textured background - or even some kind of textured paper on which some strange (to me) letters and words are written.

The very well visible but not dominating presence of the rest of the person adds some definite personal note, but still keeping the hands and the feet in a dominating position. BTW, did you soften the rest except the hands and the feet?

Very creative idea! Again an abstraction from something very material!

Nick
