About Taken as the fast ferry to Tanger was just pulling out of its berth in the Port of Tarifa. This chap was chatting away to his friend on the quay and caught my eye.

Serious critiques welcome, as always.

The diagonals.. well, they do not really lead, as they are in a perspective that follows the plane of the image, AJ, and not the direction perpedicular to it. They don't carry my eye to the depth but rather all over the plane of the image.

Or I might be too addicted to distance and depth as well. ;-)

Cheers,

Nick

Thanks Nick. Yes, a bit more contrast on the face would help. But as to the leading lines, do you not think that the diagonals above and below lead the eyes in?

Thanks Nicole. He might alternatively have been saying: "Nothing to do with me, mate!"

Thanks Bobot! You pick up on the key elements here. The washed out red and green bits at top left concern me a bit but I was happy to catch this one.

Great shot AJ.

As many have said already, the bright colours are wonderful.

All the best,

Striking colors AJ and the strong geometry embedded in the scene makes it a real eye popper! Love the tile :) :)

And it was this great in its combination of reds and greys, which for itself always has a great appeal to me! What I find so striking here is that the guy remains quite human between all that steel and machinery. I think that the light that hit him like a spotlight put him in the center of interest here, while all the rest is very well perceivable but less illuminated, excpet the red steel at the bottom right that matches his outfit so well. Perhaps a bit more contrast on his face would make it even better, but still there is enough power on his expression and gesture.

This is a good example too of what I consider to be a very natural capture. Nature doesn't have to present only flowers and the like - in this case it shines through much stronger than any kind of "romanticism" would ever manage to display. This is actually only some guy working for life, and the mere fact that he does so, and that there is no visible tendency to somehow make something "special" out of him, appears to me stronger and more natural than anything.

Now, I would (of course) put him in some extreme perspective with leading lines and the like, but the way you got the scene is very interesting - even refreshing - for me.

All the best,

Nick

vibrant colors, very interesting the man with his gesture, he is well seen, framed within the dark background and the highlights on him. Another eye catcher is the rope with its beautiful curve.
wonderful lighting and composition..
regards..

Thanks Robert. These rich (or perhaps "harsh"!) colours are typical of evening light here - hence the name, Costa de la Luz.

Many thanks, Marian. This was another occasion when I'd not found anything particularly interesting to photograph, but patience paid off in the end.

Thanks John. I have to admit to finding the whole scene a little odd, but did like the echo of the red of the ferry in the guy's clothes, and the way he contrasted with the greys of the background.
