About Here's a fun shot from yesterday's wedding. Interested in thoughts and comments regarding composition. I cropped it panoramic and used a strict rule of thirds AND centred the couple. Do you think the action of the couple breaks that 'static' feeling when subjects are placed dead centre? I considered a square crop, but I like the open-ness of the panoramic in this case. Does it work?
By the way the camera was set to auto white balance and is straight from the camera short of USM and cropping of course.

The "rules" of composition are merely safe guides for that which will work in nearly all cases. They are not hard, unbreakable laws such as gravity since they deal with artistic asthetics and preferences. Most of these "rules" can be successfully broken and this case is no exception. As one comment mentions, it becomes symbolic with this compositional emphasis and your chosen view, background and the activity displayed certainly add to that idea. So while the composition may not adhere strictly to the "rules" it doesn't harm the asthetics of this photo.

Hey, what about a slight radial blur? hmmmmmm.....that might be worth experimenting with.

Now, about that white balance and the resulting color, do you save with any profile attached or is this the camera profile? I've read some things concerning this recently and would be interested to know. Those whites in the dress have perfectly balanced shadows on my display. Does it print as it looks on the web?

I surely prefer the panoramic to the square crop but I would place them off centre...Rgds.

Louise, I don't have any kind of problem with the composition, just
exactly the way you did it! The mere fact, of it's a newly-married
couple on the beach...face-less... running for good "action"...and captured wide that makes it WORK for me! Very fun, unique and unusual. This is one of those images that was created "out-of-the-box" and it's wonderful. Shots such as these make a wedding album HAPPY! Nicely executed and presented. Congratulations. I would love to see more of your unique wedding images. Kindest Regards, Rik

I like the panaramic and centre crop. the couple being in the centre keeps the symmetry.

I am totally torn on this shot I like the panoramic view of the shot but I also think I would prefer the couple not centered. If you gave it a square crop it would make it IMHO a more "plain" or ordinary shot so for that reason I like the panoramic. I like that they are in motion but I'm not sure that is enough to break up the centering. Not sure that answered any of your questions, sorry.

Sorry, I did not try to answer your questions. Yes the static sense is broken by their obvious movement towards the sea which is directly ahead. I'd use the off centre crop to indicate movement to the side. Like the S2! The panoramic view gives a sense of freedom - they're life is now spread before them - full of their choices as man and wife. HTH

I liked the way the image is cropped in thirds the sky and the surf. I'm sure the couple will like it.
