Hi Nick, I often wonder what the pressure must be like for the son, or daughter of a superstar. Sometimes doors are opened because of a famous name, but the international press can be extra harsh if they don't live up to expectations. Andre

Yes, I guess the photo of Zizou was taken shortly before the World Cup, Andre. The small son of the sister of my girlfriend gave me the poster that was printed from the photo. My girlfirend gave me the drawing of the indonesian dancer, and so the "requisites" were all there.
But if you mean when I did shoot the image, then that was long after the World Cup and headbutt, in spring 2007. Nostalgia for the player that simply didn't care for becoming some kind of superstar but rather for dancing with footballs, you know. And that nostalgia only got bigger during the UEFA tournament.
Sigh!
Nick
P.S.: His son might one day continue that. If you have the time and the interest just take a look for example at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZcY_FEzGIs

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Gustavo!
I had neither the wish for a touch of the mystical nor the wish for a touch of humor, though. Perhaps a nostalgic touch. I noticed that the silhouettes of the two were matching relatively well, and since Zizou really danced with the football the idea was born.
Cheers!

He had many many more "inventions" just in time, Burim. As I said in my reply to Visar, that was playing with elegant simplicity and with *mind*! Take a look to the attached URLs at youtube (also in my reply to Visar).
Thanks a lot for the nice comment, and yes! Who can forget those games in the past.. Hope Enzo will continue them someday, and he is doing really well. Look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIbDypWKmNw
That guy comes completely, but completely completely after his father. So, let's wait some years! ;-)
Cheers!

What? Already after only 4 rounds? That's for the kids! We need at least 14 until we see this way! ;-)
Thanks a lot Avi! The double exposure needed perhaps a bit more correction against overexposure but all in all I'm happy with this result.
Cheers! (The 15th!! ;-))

The headbutt was the perfect way to *not* be put on the usual altar of "gods", "heroes", etc, etc. Zizou said goodbye the only way a real artist made of flesh and blood could do. He denied glorification for remaining human along with all the intrinsic hooks. (Quite contrary to the usual "fartists" who are always perfect ;-))
That was his attitude. "I am not a superstar, I only play football" - that's Zizou. And exactly this is what makes that guy so different - and what I miss so strongly.
Take all the dribblings and the moves, etc. He never used such things for demonstrating his skill. Everything was embedded into the practical problem solving of the game.
Thus he remained simple, yet unpredicatble. So many videos I have are a delight to see. There comes superstar XYZ against him with all the fanfares and the typical exposure of the own capabilities. Zizou only looks to the ground like a kung fu moch. A small move, a trick, invented right away, just in time, and goodbye superstar XYZ with all your glory. Look for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sayojf4JpyQ Ronaldinho is really a super player, but look especially at 0:13 and 0:20 how the silent simplicity of Zizou works.
Another thing is, he did it all for the team, not for his glory. While many control the ball, Zizou controlled the game. How many times his whole team looked "closed", "trapped" by the opposite team. You see that and you think, that was it! And then, a sudden change of direction, a clever pass, a trick, whatever, again invented right in time, and the whole place is freed up. Look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYUtKKbBTkw or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ItKn99F7_I . One guy empties up the opposite defence. And notice also that he most of the time *avoids* any body checks. That's for those who can't play.
The thing with Zizou was also that he simply brought the inventive, clever, live football of the streets on the green field. He actually never left that street where "inventing something" was just everyday practice. For me this is real art! Playing with mind rather than with feet, or hands or anything. How can one not miss him?
But the hymne is taken too high, and that's not worthy for such a human. So here you are also some good bloobers too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFpmYgdQZAs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ0HHeOCJ6A
Oh well... Oh, and no, I wasn't in the stadium for any of the games. The tickets were expensive up to silliness.
Cheers!

Thanks a lot, Harry!
So my years working for a bank brought creativity too? Now, that's a surprise, but don't tell anybody because the bank will send its agents to find me and they'll ask me to pay them for that too!!! ;-)
Cheers!

Hey hey, Zizou dancing a again with a ball inside the green fields
I really used to love this guy for so many years and I even had a big lifesize poster of him in my room (till I got married) and the most attractive thing about him I think that it was his move, when he would step on the ball, make a half turn leaving the opponent behind and continue his dance on the green field.
Great multiple exposure shot Nick which brought us some pleasant and nostalgic memories
Cheers Burim

i do miss him dancing in the green field Nick- really, only that i was a bit annoyed at him while playing agains Italy! when he acted a ram! it was his last game, and wasn't a good gesture to leave with a red card at his forehead!! otherwise, nowadays, i enjoy Lionel Messi- maybe even more than Zizou- fantastic player.
anyways, i cannot really tell what is that dancing woman but it seems to be a great mosaic, though it does not really matter what it is. What matters here is the blending of the two layers and the idea behind it- the dancing woman, well is dancing- like Zizou used to!
great idea Nick, a lovely tribute to Zizou!
cheers, v.
PS- since we're talking football, did you see any live game in Euro 2008, i mean in Stadium?!
