Hi Brigitte,
We were less than 70 yards from this whale.
Yes, thhe migrate during the winter months to warm, low latitude tropical waters were they breed and give birth to their babies and during the Spring/Summer/Autumn they stay in cooler, high latitude where they find abundance of food.
The wates of Monterey Bay are very rich in nutrients , so it attracts a large population of Humpback Whales.
The cost for morning trips is $45 for adults and children 12 and under $35.
This tour operators are located at the Monterey bay.
Here is their link.

On this trip I only saw 2 whales but in previous trips, I have seen over 12 Humpback Whales and over 20 Grey Whales.
If you are planning to go, first check the weather and make sure is going to be sunny and also, make sure that you brind a zoom lens, because sometimes they come very close and you may also need a telephoto, because sometimes they are too far.
Good luck and please let me knos if you have any additional questions.

Best.

Wow, awesome...great details.. you must've been close! I thought they migrated during the winter months! I am going to have to go out and see them. Can you tell me more about the trip/boat that took you there... where are the located and how much does it cost? Did you see more than one whale?

What a beautiful shot, Yamil. I LOVE the clarity of the barnacles on his fluke.
