I guess this could be a trademark of mine, however; I kinda just go with an idea, and let it rip. For the setup info:
14'wide x 45' long of lanolium (not sure of spelling) painted white which is hung from the wall. Gel (red) lighting from two sides to create the red background.
White grid placed 2 feet in front of the gel'd lights. Now the grid looks black. Really it's underexposed :)
The girl is around 4 foot in front of the grid, so the light that shines on her doesn't spill onto the white grid.
Black and white plastic tiles for the flooring. Main light in a medium softbox camera left to light her right side up. Gold reflector to add fill to her left.
Pretty much it.
Thankx

Phillip, tell us more about the background. Is it a single sheet or is it 3d? The bottom of the background appears to blend flat squares and vertical lines. I love the upper part and what, in my mind, is beocming your trademark is the contrasts between the background and the subject is wonderful. In most cases I would argue against such strong colors for backgrounds but you obviously know how to handle them and make them work for you and not against you.

Phillip...nice shot. The lighting on the model is really nice. I have to agree with Maggie though; the wooden chair just doesn't seem to fit for some reason. Her hair looks a little awkward around the top...a little flat.
Anyway, just my .02 cents.

Hey Phillip *smile*...I love the background and your lighting is wonderful. The back of the chair seems unnatural somehow...like it isnt tied into the image. I think what I'm feeling is that it is a prop that is not being used...I'm expecting to see the models hand on it to tie it in..or something???
Does anyone else get this feeling or is it just me. Overal its a great portrait Phillip....I always enjoy looking at your images...*smile*...Maggie
