It doesn't have to be a torch all the time, Shirley. The flashlight did also very well, so it is OK if you used this or that. To me it is the (possible) relation of the two methods that I try to examine a bit further for understanding some things more about the correspondance of the two.

Cheers!

Nick

I've also used the 'painting with light' during long exposures with great results. Unfortunately, it was a long walk back to the car from this location, and no torch with me.:)

Thanks a lot for the info, Shirley! That darkening of the regions around her gives me a hint for understanding the non-constant light there. Gustavo has made something similar, less subtle and more definite, by using a long time exposure and a torch with which he "painted" over his subject in a very dark room while the aperture was open. So it seems that there is a correspondance between his "physical" and your digital method. Normally one should take care for a more uniform burning/dodging but it seems that in some cases a bit of less uniformity can also do good.

Cheers!

Nick

Hi Nick, Thanks for the great critique.

Actually, the original photo was taken at dusk with, yes, direct on-camera flash, since it was getting too dark otherwise. I scanned the slide and selectively layered with a blurred version, darkening the areas surrounding her. Any pixelation you see must have come from the resizing in my old software (Microsoft Picture It).

It attracted my attention already as a thumb because of the light difference between your protagonist and the rest of the scene, Shirley. And on the full size image this difference looks even better and stronger, but also sdditinal charms. The light on her looks soft and diffracted much like the smooth shines of a sioft focus lens, but still the details are exact and nice to see. There is a tiny amount of zig-zag pixeöation in some contours, especially on the garss around her, which nonetheless doesn't disturb at all when I look at the image as a whole.

The exposure balance worked well but how did you manage to get the above mentioned difference in lighting? This can't have been a single light source directed to her or even a flashlight since there are attenuations of light intensity on her which do not follow her 3-D shape.

Anyway, good image with a bit of that "romanticism" of the 1940s when women had nothing else to do than to look etherial on images just for imposing once again their "sweetness", but this also introduced some amount of aged look that fits well the already mentioned softness on her.

Cheers!

Nick
