Thanks a lot for the very interesting info, Marcio! Just think of that, a festival taken from Portugal down to Brazil and it still survives to out days! Fascinating!

It does have value without any doubt, Ian.
And Marcio's info is very interesting for itself but also in combination with the image. It seems that many things are tranferred away from the "mother country" and survive there for a longer time.
Cheers!

During 12 days, from the home - until January 6, the Ensign of Folia, head of "foliões ", knocking on your door may at any time of dawn, followed by the clowns of the Kings and their noisy instruments. Vai awaken anyone sleeping, ask to enter, to have coffee and collect money for the "Folia de Reis ", a popular festival of Portuguese origin which still survives in Brazilian towns. Vai offers a colorful flag, adorned with ribbons and Santinho, while outside, the clowns will dance to the sound of the guitar, the tambourine, the cavaquinho, reciting verses. This festival commemorates the birth of Christ. Its plot recalls the journey that the three wise men - Balthazar, Gaspar and Belchior - have to Bethlehem to find the baby Jesus. The clown, dressed in character and covered by masks, representing the soldiers of King Herod, in jerusalem. The foliões wings open with a flag that - say! - Is blessed and protected from bad influences. After 12 days of journey, the money collected is spent on drink and eat for everyone. (Google translate)

Indeed it looks as a "ceremony piece", Ian, that does have some "history" behind it. But I can't recognize how long back its history goes. It would be interesting if Marcio could tell us something about it.
Cheers!

Nick your words are so usefull, thanks allways! Marcio the details here tell me this is well worn, a relic as well as a costume! The party's in the people shots but the sense of history shown here, in the details.

And veryy good details too, especially under the great colors! The stronger light and reflection on the crown make it stand out very well in front of the similar but less intense colors of the background. Actually a very tight and consistent color palette which plays a good role on this composition.
But the hands holding the crown have their own charms too. Especially the right one. Very good toning and plastictity again.
Can we consider cutting off much of the top part as yet another possibility? (Attachment)
Cheers!
