In the western region ( Jeddah, Tabuk ) there are still remains of the era of reign by the ottoman empire. I saw an old steam locomotive in Tabuk, used on an old railway from Istanbul via Damascus to Mecca.

I worked for the UK construction company that built 800kms of rail track in KSA near the Jordanian border. I went there in 2009 to develop a safeworking system that would allow the work trains to move around the construction without killing anyone. I also trained the some of the people there to use it. I went there twice for a total of four weeks. Spent some time at Riyadh and the Jeddah airports I'd love to go back there one day Regards
