Well, I guess someone chose his Turkish name because it was the most appropriate ;) I guess the word was "karakulak".
Caracal is spreaded quite widely in Africa and south-west Asia; and lives also in southern Turkey.
In some places in Asia (mainly in India but not only) caracal was being tamed and used as hunter (mainly bird hunter), more than any hunting dogs. It is said that it's not difficult to tame caracal, if it has contact with people from kittenhood.
