Great experiment Stan.. I tried a few months ago to do a similar shot with a FZ8, but wasn't happy with the results. It is definitely a difficult shot to make.

Stan I tried that shot with a 170 to 500m lens on film and it was bad. Taking an image os the moon like this is hard to do. But a good try. Cheers Alvin

Una toma realmente difícil, tal vez falte un poco de nitidez o enfoque...

Un abrazo!

Very noisy photo, the white areas are burnt out. Your camera isn't suits that mission.

Look at the moon--it's white. It's overexposed. While you've been flipping your settings around, you've probably been keeping that little mark in the middle. Move it to the left, and try a few stops down. Remember, the moon is a brightly sunlit object....Keep shooting Stan, riny

Interesting that the surface get pixeled, but that is probably after a severe crop in post processing. Even with an optical zoom of 486 mm or higher it would never show the pixels. Or was it the high ASA value of your camera causing a pixel type of noise e.g. 1600 ASA or higher I assume with your Panasonic Lumix.
Interesting also that the only craters visible are those which got less illumination with strike light (at top and at right). A 7 rating for your experiment and result.
Best wishes,
Paul
